What is an actual-play?

Actual-Plays are a way of experiencing and enjoying TTRPGs (Tabletop Role-Playing Games - think Dungeons and Dragons, that sort of thing.) In an actual-play, people create stories together with unique characters. The players do all the main characters, the perspective characters that the plot follows. The GM plays everyone else, from villains to friends to random bit parts. Through the performers’ imaginations and the mechanical systems (dice rolls, character abilities, etc.) of the game being played, a story—whether it be a one-shot told in a couple of hours or a massive campaign of many sessions—is cooperatively created for the enjoyment of both the performers and their audience. Famous examples of actual-plays include Critical Role and Dropout’s Dimension 20.
